The Jämthund and the wild boar

Hunting wild boar in Sweden is a great challenge. Robin Leadersson is then accompanied by his Jämthund “Inga”. He explains how she supports him on his wild boar hunts. Plus: Why she is the perfect family dog.

HUNTING WILD BOAR IN SWEDEN

Hunting wild boar in Sweden is a great challenge. On a wild boar hunt, there are usually two or three of us in the group who know the area. I walk, accompanied by Inga, to the area where we suspect the game to be. We walk into a headwind so that Inga can identify the wild boars more easily. My hunting buddies stand at trails that the boars tend to run. When everyone is in position, I let Inga loose.

As soon as Inga detects the wild boars, she begins to bark around 80 to 100 times per minute. Once Inga is barking, I sit down in some pleasant spot and enjoy listening to her at work. When I feel ready, I stalk in Inga’s direction and, ideally, get to shoot. But shooting isn’t the most important thing.

HUNTING WITH THE JÄMTHUND (SWEDISH ELKHOUND)

When I’m out hunting with Inga, my Jämthund, she starts to work immediately after being released. As soon as she spots the game, she begins to bark at it to make it stand still. I then know I can sneak closer. What I love most of all is simply the opportunity to go into the woods alone with Inga, let her off the leash, work together, and enjoy nature.

Inga can easily switch from being a family dog, playing with the kids, to hunting wild boar, moose, and bear. She has a friendly and calm, but also stable and confident character, which enables her to perfectly combine family and work.

„WHAT I LOVE MOST OF ALL IS SIMPLY THE OPPORTUNITY TO GO INTO THE WOODS ALONE WITH INGA, LET HER OFF THE LEASH, WORK TOGETHER, AND ENJOY NATURE.“
