What to consider when choosing your binoculars

Objective lens diameter

The objective lens diameter specifies how much light can enter the optics. This makes it a key factor in an instrument’s performance, for example, in twilight. The bigger the objective lens diameter, the more light the objective lens can capture. The darker the surroundings, the larger the objective lens diameter needs to be. Check the precise product name as the number after the ‘x’ specifies the objective lens diameter in millimeters. For example, a device with the suffix 10x42 has an objective lens with a diameter of 42 mm.

Magnification

The magnification specifies the factor by which an object appears to be closer in comparison with the actual distance. The higher the magnification, the closer the object seems to be. However, a higher magnification also means a smaller field of view. Check the precise product name as the number in front of the ‘x’ specifies the magnification. For example, 10x42 is a device with 10x magnification.

Field of view

The field of view describes the size of the image section that can be seen through the optics. This is specified either in meters (width) at a distance of 1000 meters (m/1000m), or feet (width) at a distance of 1000 yards (ft/1000 yds), or as an angle (degrees). The higher the magnification, the smaller the field of view.
Binoculars have a large field of view, which means you can see a wide area. Spotting scopes have a higher magnification, which makes the field of view much smaller, but you can see more detail.

Shortest focusing distance

The shortest focusing distance specifies how close an object needs to be to see it clearly with the optics. Between this value and infinity, it is possible to focus the image.

Like all the binoculars in the NL Pure product series, the NL Pure 12x42 also feature the innovative SWAROVISION technology. The specially shaped lenses provide crystal-clear images all the way to the edges. If your eye moves in the large field of view, this technology eliminates the need to refocus.

Brief description of the SWAROVISION technology

The key feature of the ground-breaking SWAROVISION technology is the field flattener lenses which offset the curvature of the field of view and provide edge sharpness. This means the complete image stays sharp from the middle of the field of view all the way to the edges. There is no need to refocus if your eye moves in the image, you can immediately see every detail in absolute clarity. The special coating on the lenses in combination with the inert gas filling ensures color fidelity.

The NL Pure series

The binoculars in the NL Pure series offer an enormous field of view all the way to the edges. The wasp waist ensures that each optical device sits ergonomically in your hand. This makes all the binoculars in this product series loyal companions even during extended periods of use. The amazing quality provided by SWAROVISION and the field flattener lenses guarantees precise and razor-sharp images with no distortion.

Very good. Very Very good. Very good image. Very good clarity, contrast, and "3Dness" of image. Best image on a bino. Period. Good lowlight perf. Good for dawn and dusk performance within reasonable use. Very Good FOV. You'd get a 10x bino FOV, in a 12x mag bino. Very good handshake control. With the extra $169 foreshead rest and the extra $45 winged eye cup, you'd get a 10x bino handshake, a 12x mag bino. Very good form factor. Good size and weight with respect to other alpha glass. Also nice color. Very good build quality. Mechanically awesome. Feels very good in the hand. Good-ish price. I would give 4 or even 3 star review given price of bino. However, price is not more than other alpha glass such as Victory SF. Bruises like peach. Be very mindful of keep bino lens away from dirt, dust, and oils. Use ONLY distill water to clean. Do not even use dust blower let alone alchohol to clean lens. Any small mistake will smear lens coating... Unique shape, though I don't think meaningful. Holding the binocular on the end will aid stability. So, if you hold the bino at the end, the advertised hourglass shape ergonomicness is lost. If anything, the hourglass shape is more of an NL pure advertisement. Vexxing bino mount options. Need to buy extra dedicated $199 Swaro Bino mount. Other 3rd party ~$100 options are available, but will require some research and reading.

    The best binoculars hands down.

Great glass...Finally decided that 12's made sense for chasing elk, after many years of carrying 10x42 SLC's. Chose the 12x42's because of weight...They are still bright and clear. First look through the glass was able to pick out two crows chasing what looked to be a red tailed hawk at close to a mile away. Impressive.
