In the heart of the Dolomites in Italy’s South Tyrol, which last year celebrated a decade of being included in the UNESCO World Heritage List, San Vigilio di Marebbe writes its own story in terms of ecological footprint. The village protects the area against excessive consumption of natural resources, but also adapts its tourist offer to climate change and to the increasing interest in outdoor tourism in unspoilt environments.
This vocation is the reason why San Vigilio/San Martin Dolomites is popular with important brands of outdoor sports accessories and equipment. As sustainable development is at the heart of our company philosophy as well, it was clear that SWAROVSKI OPTIK was keen to
cooperate with one of the Dolomite valleys’ most “sustainable destinations”. Luckily, EBN Italia, the national association to promote birdwatching in Italy, joined in with an exceptional
spotting program of examples of Golden eagle, which reflects the low human population levels in the area.
Our Italian subsidiary will soon be presenting one of its 2020 innovations in San Vigilio di Marebbe, opening a new frontier in outdoor educational entertainment: the dG(#digitalguide). It is the first optical device that automatically identifies animals when connected to an app. The dG also allows to share sightings live with other people nearby. A revolutionary way to observe wildlife and one that has encouraged San Vigilio di Marebbe to start up its own Citizen Science project for the next summer season. Day trippers and hikers will be able to rent a dG and other optical devices from the offices of the San Vigilio/San Martin tourist association, or the Natural Park center, and will then be asked to share their sightings in the area.
But this winter’s Wildlife Viewing activity includes a program with “Experience.Nature”, at the Hotel Teresa. One of the program’s most interesting proposals is a full immersion in the nature of the Dolomites. An experience to enjoy also with the Alpine Guides of San Vigilio/San Martin Dolomites during snowshoe walks to spot local wildlife from the most spectacular vantage points using CL Companion binoculars.
Discovering the variety of animals in this area is thrilling, even while pausing to rest after a lengthy trek. Up at the Fanes refuge’s high altitudes, , the futuristic ST Vista outdoor telescope offers hikers unusual scenes. Observe wildlife in its natural habitat at the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Natural Park. A location where you can enjoy pure nature.
