Every November, birders from around the world head to the southern tip of Texas for the Rio Grande Valley Birding Festival, one of the longest-running and best-loved birding events in North America. The Lower Rio Grande Valley sits where two major migratory flyways meet, so it is home to species you won't find anywhere else in the United States. Look for Green Jays, Great Kiskadees, Altamira Orioles, and Plain Chachalacas. For five days, attendees can join professionally guided field trips to the Valley's best hotspots, including coastal wetlands, thorn forest, and riparian corridors. The festival also offers keynote talks, seminars, hands-on workshops, and a dedicated photography track. The evenings are for socializing: a welcome reception, trivia night, and nightly gatherings with fellow birders. At the center of it all is the Birders Bazaar trade show, where you can try the latest optics and gear, meet tour companies, and connect with the birding community. The Bazaar, kids' activities, and festival store are free and open to the public, so you don't need to register to stop by.
