Global Bird Weekend 2020

Great achievements and many smiles

What a great weekend we had!

The Global Bird Weekend, which took place on October 17-18, 2020, was a full success. Partnering up with Cornell’s October Big Day, the event was joined by 30,000+ eBird users from 160+ countries who submitted more than 75,000 checklists and recorded over 7,000 different bird species. Incredibly, this is quite likely the record number of bird species ever observed on a single day! Considering that birders are social beings, it is safe to assume that 60,000+ people spend their time birding last weekend to support citizen science and to raise awareness for a common cause: Stopping Illegal Bird Trade.

Stop Illegal Bird Trade

The whole event celebrates the art of birding worldwide, demonstrates the power of citizen science, and seeks to raise awareness for one cause: The Illegal Bird Trade. The scale of the illegal wild bird trade drives many birds to extinction. In the course of the event, more than € 22,000+ was raised to stop these illicit practices.

Birding Live on Location

In the course of the Global Bird Weekend, we invited you to join a group of passionate birders while they were birding live from different locations all over the globe. Check out the fascinating broadcast from Asia, Africa & Europe, which featured 63+ species, among them Ibisbills, Red-billed Blue Magpies, African Penguins, and Bat Hawks. Or watch the great discoveries we had in North & South America, such as a Sandhill Crane & Cackling Goose spectacle in California, a slew of tanagers and 15+ hummingbird species.

The Common Kingfisher (Alcedo atthis) looks rather exotic. However, it can be found in many parts of Asia and Europe along rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds—almost any fresh or brackish habitat with small fish.

Stay tuned at #gobirding

Bird races like these are amazing opportunities to come together as a birding community and support a common cause. We are looking forward to the next citizen science events, such as the Christmas Bird Count, the Big Garden Birdwatch and “Die Stunde der Wintervögel” in January. However, identifying and counting birds is important no matter which day of the year it is or where you are.

So, what are you waiting for? #gobirding! Grab your binoculars or dG, head out to discover wildlife, and start sharing your observations today.
