You cannot wait for the hunting season to start? Here are some tips on how to enjoy the anticipation and how to get ready for a great new hunting year.

Get your firearm and rifle scope ready

During winter, many firearms get a well-deserved rest. This “beauty sleep”, however, means that you need to make sure your rifle is still in top condition. If you have any concerns about the condition of your rifle, please contact your local gunsmith. If everything is in order, a thorough cleaning of the firearm, especially of the barrel, makes total sense. As you know, a clean barrel plays a decisive role in the flawless functioning of your hunting rifle.

In order to get your rifle scope ready, make sure to clean its lenses with the appropriate equipment. The process is the same as for the cleaning of your binocular’s lenses. Then, check the illumination of your reticle. Last but not least, make sure to prepare your SG scope guard and dust off the winter’s rest.

Shoot at least three shots, preferably five, with the same holdover point without making any changes to the firearm or scope. Depending on the field of application, the type of weapon and your own ideas, the diameter of your shoot group should be below 40mm (1.5in). If you can shoot as tight as 25 mm (1in), that’s even better.

When you have achieved a satisfactory group, you can correct the holdover point by adjusting the height and side. With SWAROVSKI OPTIK rifle scopes, remember: turn in the direction in which the shot is to be fired! On the height tower H for up - upwards, side tower R for right - to the right.

After letting your rifle cool down, shoot another group of 3 (5) shots. Then take a look at the group’s straying circle as well as its desired position on the target. The most recommended distance (MRD) aims to achieve a high shot of 40mm when shooting at a target 100m away, 1.5in at 100yds in the imperial system.

Depending on the hunting ground, personal requirements or technical equipment such as ballistic turret or distance reticle, the desired zeroed distance can vary.

Attached you will find a target, which, in addition to precise aiming, also allows you to immediately assess the shooting group’s tightness and position. The squares (10mm x 10mm, 0.4in x 0.4in) will help you to adjust your scope in the right direction. Remember that for the Z6i and Z8i 1 click equals 10mm (0.4in) at a shooting distance of 100m (~110 yd).

Prepare your binoculars and spotting scopes

Your binoculars and spotting scopes also won’t mind a spring cleaning. To ensure a crisp and clear view, we recommend you cleanse your optical equipment before starting the hunting season. Here’s a video on how to clean the lenses of your binoculars and spotting scope modules .

Make sure you have all your accessories, such as field bag, eyepiece cover, objective lens cover and lift carrying strap, ready for use as well.

If necessary, consider bringing your devices to an expert for a check-up service.

Feel the anticipation while observing in advance

Especially shortly before the season opens, you want to spend as much time as possible in your hunting grounds to better anticipate your game’s whereabouts and behavior. Thus, head out and observe as often as you can. Closely inspect your area, watch the wildlife and enjoy the time outdoors.

In order to document your stock of game, you can use the Digiscoping equipment offered for your optical gear. Take pictures with your smartphone or camera, so you will have a record of the situation before the season started.
