The Bird Nerds at Biggest Week in American Birding

The Bird Nerds as they are known, is the East Clark Elementary School in Cleveland, OH’s bird watching club. The club advisor Richard (Buster) Banish an educator at the school, received a grant to fund a field trip to Magee Marsh and Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge in OH. Richard has been birding the past 25 years or so and thought it would be a good idea to start a birding club at the school as there was some interest in birding. During the Biggest Week in American Birding the Bird Nerds had their field trip, SWAROVSKI OPTIK supplied them binoculars for the day. The Black Swamp Bird Observatory’s Biggest Week in American Birding is the largest birding festival in the US. It takes place over 10 days and draws in around 100,000 people. The Festival is held in Northwest Ohio, the warbler capital of the world in early May. It is one of the best places to observe spring migration of songbirds in the US.

The kids studied the birds in class then got to see them in person at the festival.

Richard and a couple of his students were featured on the local TV station WKYC’s segment of We the People. In the clip he explains how the Bird Nerds Club got started and the excitement of the kids getting to see what they were learning in the classroom in real life outside. Even though the weather was not the best, they still managed to see the famed warblers and had a great day exploring and learning more about nature.
