In the case of the Canary Island Houbara Bustard, this is an endangered sub-species, whose habitat is restricted to plains, steppes and semi-desert on two of the Canary Islands (Lanzarote und Fuerteventura). At the last count, there were a total of 559 birds, 303 on Lanzarote and 256 on Fuerteventura.
SWAROVSKI OPTIK made a financial contribution to the acquisition of land by SEO/Birdlife at Los Alares on Fuerteventura, thereby ensuring the necessary measures are in place for the conservation of biotope that is important for the survival of this bird species. As well as the Houbara Bustard, Fuerteventura is also home to other important bird species, which make use of the habitat, e.g. the Cream-colored Courser and the Black-bellied Sandgrouse. All in all, the desert habitat is in itself worth preserving and of special ecological interest.
